Shelly Fullerton has been teaching private voice and piano lessons for over 30 years. She has been based in Airdrie, Alberta, (Calgary area) for 20 of those years. A professional singer with experience in many styles of singing, from musical theatre (Medora Musical Burning Hills Singer), to pop (numerous venues) to opera (Calgary Opera, Opera Nuova), she brings her love of singing, and her performance expertise to every student every singing lesson.
Shelly's goal is to awaken the performer in every student, while building the voice with solid technique. She has a degree in music education, plus several years of additional training with vocal coaches in private lessons and master class settings, including the late Richard Miller, of Oberlin Conservatory, Ernest Atkinson of Calgary, Nico Castel of Metropolitan Opera, Lisa Popeil (Voiceworx) and Jeanette Lovetri of New York. She has Level III certification in Somatic Voicework⢠The LoVetri Method, Shenandoah Conservatory (Contemporary Commercial Music).
A foundation of her skills building formula, is vocal exercises individually tailored to the needs of the student at every singing lesson. And of course - songs. Lots of songs. Singing with comfort, ease, and above all, SAFETY is paramount. It is Shelly's goal to prepare each student to be able to confidently sing in public, and they do! Her recitals are highly anticipated because they are fun to watch and because students are ready to perform!
Students are given the opportunity to build confidence by performing in two studio recitals per year.
Music festival, in which students prepare songs for competition and evaluation, is another important week on the annual calendar.
Royal Conservatory exam preparation is an option, and several students a year successfully complete voice exams.
Many former students have gone on to professional careers in the world of music. Several are educators, others write and perform their own music, are recording artists, and sing opera or musical theatre professionally. Many have gone on to complete Bachelor's and Master's degrees in voice performance and education. It is Shelly's great joy to watch these artists soar! She takes just as much joy in watching shy or uncertain students find their voice and experience the joy of performing for themselves!
